Dear Parents/Guardians:
It has been reported that the student at the Walker Grant Center Preschool Program was found not to have a case of meningitis. One child in FCPS has been diagnosed with viral, non-contagious meningitis and is under doctor’s care. People often confuse viral meningitis with bacterial meningitis, because the symptoms can be similar. Bacterial meningitis is very serious, sometimes even fatal. However, this case was viral and not bacterial; therefore, no treatment of children who have been in contact with the affected child is required. If you feel that your child has any of the symptoms of a virus such as fever, headache, stiff neck, and a general feeling of not being well you should take him or her to the doctor immediately. Only a doctor can diagnose meningitis.
The schools are taking extra precautions toward cleanliness and disinfecting as this is the common season for colds, flu and other viruses. The most effective method of preventing infection is to wash your hands thoroughly and often. Besides frequent washing of hands, children should be advised not to share drinks and food with friends.
The schools are confident that there is no current risk of contagious meningitis. If you have any questions regarding viral meningitis, you may contact your local Health Department at 899-4142 your own doctor or your child’s school nurse. Please know that we have your children’s best interests at heart.
